And what is Up North Rap?
Up North rap is a style of music created in Northern US cities. These cities saw an influx of Blacks from the south during the 1900's. These hardworking, strong minded people left the south in search of jobs and a better life in the north where they heard Blacks were getting work, driving nice cars and were being treated better. After making the move though, for so many the American dream became a nightmare. Many were unable to find jobs or decent living conditions and found themselves trapped by cities filled with projects, racist police, liquor stores and poverty. Some however were able to find jobs in factories and make a living. That is until the factories left. This left many cities full of Blacks with no jobs who now had to fend for themselves any way possible-cities like Chicago, Detroit, Ford Heights, IL, Cleveland, and many more. From this situation came a style of Hip Hop called Up North Rap which became a way for the youth, not just Blacks but all who were affected by life in the North, to express how we felt and how we feel. Stay tuned.
